ANOTHER DIMENSION - a hands on interactive workshop for youth focused on Quadraphonic sound or spatialized music, sometimes known as diffusion. Quadraphonic sound provides a way to create an immersive feeling for live sound performances and deep listening sessions of pre recorded sonic material. This involves utilizing more than the traditional 2 stereo speakers and requires 4 or more speakers surrounding the listener. With this speaker arrangement and certain specialized computer programs the elements of a sonic composition can be sent in various directions around the listener and give motion to the sound. Make the music DANCE!
Participants will be guided through some examples of what spatialization can do, listening to and identifying the motion of the sound. an opportunity will be given to try out guiding and directing the motion through hands on access to a midi controller, allowing them to play with the the sound in real-time. After a snack, stretch and free time break, we will reconvene to direct the diffusion of various elements of a pre recorded composition made for this purpose, allowing each member of the group to select an element of sound and what motion to apply to it.
Workshop facilitator and multidisciplinary artist @Sara Gold takes great joy in providing immersive and educational experiences for youth. Centred around the intersections of sound, technology, nature and science, their workshops engage young minds with unique subjects and a hands on approach.
This youth workshop is being hosted on the unceded, asserted & shared traditional territories of Penelakut, Lamalcha, Hwlitsum and other Hul’qumi’num and SENĆOŦEN speaking peoples, Coast Salish Peoples of Galiano, as well as the ceded territories of Tsawwassen First Nation, on what is now known as Galiano Island.
